GIS Textual Knowledge Sources have been derived from three information sources: GeoRef from American Geological Institute (AGI), Petroleum Abstracts (PA) from Petroleum Abstracts Service, University of Tulsa, and Compendex from Engineering Information, Inc. (Ei)). There are 46 concept spaces generated automatically: 3 from GeoRef, 1 from PA, and 42 from Compendex. In addition, the GeoRef Thesaurus from GeoRef Information Services has been converted to a searchable service. All these textual knowledge sources serve the need of gathering closely related concepts in the geoscience domain area. Other than searching, a 2-dimensional categorization map, automatically generated by Kohonen-based self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm, shows categories in a sub-collection of GeoRef.
